Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography

Sacred treasures of the high Caucasus

Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography

This 2012 museum in Mestia houses Georgia's richest collection of Svaneti's material soul: gilded medieval icons from remote mountain churches, 9th-18th century manuscripts in Georgian asomtavruli and nuskhuri scripts, and ethnographic objects revealing a warrior-shepherd culture that endured centuries of isolation. The building itself—striking modernist stone and glass—frames the collection against the very peaks that protected these treasures from Mongol, Persian, and Soviet destruction. Each icon tells of Svaneti's role as Georgia's spiritual ark; each weapon and ritual object speaks of blood feuds, communal defense, and Orthodox devotion forged at 2,000 meters.
