Mikhail Khergiani House-Museum

The living room of the Tiger of the Cliffs

Mikhail Khergiani House-Museum

This modest wooden house in central Mestia holds the story of Mikhail Khergiani (1932–1969), the Svan mountaineer who conquered the Caucasus and Himalayas before dying young on the Matterhorn. The museum preserves his ice axes, rope-worn harnesses, and faded photographs from the Soviet alpine golden age, when Svaneti produced disproportionate numbers of elite climbers. His sister keeps the rooms as he left them—boots by the door, prayer corner intact—making this not a curated exhibition but a genuine Svan home honoring a man who carried his people's reputation onto the world's highest peaks. The humility astonishes.
