Lakhiri

Where silence guards the valley below

Lakhiri

Lakhiri is one of the most accessible of Svaneti's medieval tower villages, rising on a forested ridge just east of Mestia. Unlike the famous clusters of Ushguli or Chazhashi, Lakhiri offers something quieter: a pilgrimage on foot through ancient woodland to a settlement that time barely touched. The walk itself is the revelation—an hour's ascent through beech and conifer, past abandoned homesteads and stone water troughs, before the village reveals its handful of surviving Svan towers. From Lakhiri's meadows, the view folds back across the entire Mestia valley: the Tetnuldi massif, the curling Enguri, the toy-town sprawl of Mestia itself. It is perspective, earned.

On the ground See

  • The 30-minute to 1-hour forest trail from Mestia's eastern edge, marked by occasional red-and-white blazes and stone shepherd shelters
  • Three intact medieval defensive towers among ruined homesteads, the best preserved rising 12 meters with original wooden floor beams
  • The panoramic viewpoint at the village's upper edge, directly facing Mount Tetnuldi and the full sweep of the Greater Caucasus spine

Practical Know before you go

Best hiked May through October; the trail begins behind the Mestia Ethnography Museum and is navigable without a guide, though snow can linger into late spring at 1,400 meters.
