Vaziani

Where Gombori's foothills meet the qvevri

Vaziani

Vaziani is a quiet Kakhetian village pressed against the Gombori Range's lower slopes, where the Vaziani Winery has operated since Soviet times—one of the larger state-founded estates that survived privatization and now produces both European-style wines and chacha, the potent Georgian grape spirit. The setting matters: the winery sits where the Alazani Valley's heat meets mountain coolness, creating a pocket for crisp whites and structured reds. Visitors come less for romance than for straightforward access to tank and qvevri samples without the tourist theater of more famous cellars, plus views of the ridgeline that divides Kakheti from the inner Caucasus.

On the ground See

  • Tour the Vaziani Winery production halls and sample tank-fermented Rkatsiteli alongside their oak-aged Saperavi
  • Walk the vineyard rows at the Gombori foothills, where elevation shifts create distinct microclimates within single parcels
  • Drive or hike the unpaved road toward the Gombori Pass for sweeping views across the Alazani Valley toward the Dagestani border

Practical Know before you go

Best visited March through November; the winery accepts visitors by appointment, and reaching the upper foothill tracks requires a vehicle with clearance.
