Tbilisi National Park - Mt. Saguramo

Tbilisi's green lung rises above the capital

Tbilisi National Park - Mt. Saguramo

Mt. Saguramo anchors Tbilisi National Park, established in 1973 as Georgia's first national park, built on the 1946 Saguramo reserve—a deliberate conservation triumph after decades of Soviet-era deforestation. The mountain's mixed broadleaf forests of oak, hornbeam, and beech cloak a ridge that has watched over human settlement for millennia. Its summit rewards hikers with sweeping views across the Mtkvari River gorge, where the ancient trade route squeezed between the Caucasus and Lesser Caucasus mountains. Unlike distant alpine treks, Saguramo offers accessible wilderness minutes from Old Tbilisi, a living demonstration of Georgia's effort to preserve its endemic biodiversity while keeping nature within reach of its capital's residents.
