Oniore Waterfall

Samegrelo's secret vertical forest

Oniore Waterfall

Oniore Waterfall plunges through dense Colchic boxwood and yew forest near Martvili, a landscape that has persisted since before the last ice age. The 20-meter cascade gathers in a cold emerald pool that locals have long considered healing—Samegrelo's humid subtropical climate pumps moisture from the Black Sea, feeding ferns and moss that carpet every surface. Unlike the developed Martvili Canyon nearby, Oniore remains raw and rarely visited; you hear the falls before you see them, then emerge from tunnel-like vegetation onto slick limestone shelves where the water splits into silver threads. It rewards those willing to trade convenience for intimacy.

On the ground See

  • The main falls from the limestone shelf viewpoint, best captured in morning mist
  • The pre-glacial relict forest of Pontic rhododendron and endemic ferns along the approach track
  • The small hydroelectric ruins upstream, abandoned Soviet infrastructure being reclaimed by vegetation

Practical Know before you go

Reachable year-round from Martvili via 4km unpaved track from Oniore village; spring and autumn offer clearest water and most stable forest light, while summer brings dense humidity and winter can ice the approach.
