Balda Canyon

Hidden gorge with emerald pools and faith

Balda Canyon

Carved by the Abasha River in western Georgia, Balda Canyon lies near Martvili in the lush Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region. This serene canyon reveals terraced waterfalls, natural swimming holes, and moss-draped cliffs shaped by centuries of flowing water. At its edge stands the historic Balda Monastery, a 10th-century Orthodox retreat nestled in the forest, reflecting the spiritual heritage of the area. Fewer visitors than nearby canyons make it a peaceful escape into nature and history. The combination of cool dips, forested trails, and ancient stone offers a quiet yet profound experience of Georgia’s diverse landscape.
