Lopota Lake

Mountain mirror where Kakheti unwinds

Lopota Lake

Lopota Lake sits at 1,000 meters in the foothills of the Caucasus, a man-made reservoir created in the Soviet era that has become one of Georgia's most sophisticated rural retreats. The lake's still waters reflect oak and beech forests where wild boar still roam, while the surrounding Lopota Lake Resort & Spa has transformed a former collective farm into a sanctuary of Georgian hospitality. What draws discerning travelers is the rare combination: you can kayak at dawn, taste estate-grown Saperavi by noon, and sleep in a renovated 19th-century manor house. It represents the new Kakheti—wine country reimagined as wellness destination without sacrificing authenticity.

On the ground See

  • Kayak or paddleboard across the 1.5km lake as the Caucasus peaks emerge through morning mist
  • Tour the Lopota winery's qvevri cellar and taste their estate wines paired with Kakhetian cuisine
  • Walk the 8km forest trail circling the lake, where wild pear trees and abandoned Soviet-era infrastructure create unexpected landscapes

Practical Know before you go

Best visited May through October; the resort is 2.5 hours from Tbilisi via the Gombori Pass, with the final 15km on unpaved mountain road requiring caution in wet weather.
