Kvemo Khevi

Where glaciers meet the sky

Kvemo Khevi

Kvemo Khevi is the high-altitude heart of Kazbegi, a sweeping alpine corridor carved by the Tergi River at roughly 2,000 meters. This is the domain of seasonal shepherds and the gateway to two legendary valleys: Juta, beneath the serrated Chaukhi Massif locals call the 'Georgian Dolomites,' and Truso, a wild, semi-abandoned valley of mineral springs and ruined Ossetian villages. The terrain here shaped centuries of transhumance and trade between Georgia and the North Caucasus. Come for the raw scale—glaciers visible from the road, stone towers silhouetted against 5,000-meter peaks—and for the sense that you are standing at the edge of a world still governed by weather and altitude.

On the ground See

  • Hike or horseback ride from Juta village to the Chaukhi Lakes, a 7-kilometer trail beneath the jagged 3,800-meter Chaukhi peaks
  • Drive or trek into Truso Valley to see the abandoned Zakagori fortress, bubbling travertine formations, and the Georgian-Russian border zone
  • Pause at the Soviet-era Arch of Friendship viewpoint for framed views of Mount Kazbek (5,047m) and the Tergi River gorge

Practical Know before you go

Best June–September; heavy snow closes Juta and Truso roads from November to May, and 4WD is essential for Truso even in summer.
