Why go
Khvanchkara is not merely a wine—it is the liquid signature of Racha-Lechkhumi's alpine terroir, a naturally semi-sweet red crafted from the rare Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli grapes that grow nowhere else on earth. Tsar Nicholas II granted it imperial favor; Stalin reportedly kept it for his private table. Unlike fortified sweet wines, its residual sugar comes solely from arrested fermentation, preserving the grapes' wild strawberry and alpine raspberry essence. The journey winds through the Rioni River gorge past stone villages where families have tended these finicky vines since the 19th century, when Prince Dimitri Kipiani first perfected the blend. Worth the journey because this is one of Georgia's few appellations of origin—you cannot taste authentic Khvanchkara anywhere else.
