Ambrolauri

Where Rioni and Krikhula meet

Ambrolauri

Ambrolauri has served as Racha-Lechkhumi's administrative heart since Soviet times, but its true purpose is as gateway to Georgia's most underrated wine region. This modest town anchors explorations of Nikortsminda's 11th-century domed cathedral—a masterpiece of Georgian stone carving—and the alpine mirror of Shaori Lake, while putting Khvanchkara's semi-sweet cellars within reach. Unlike Svaneti's dramatic crowds or Kakheti's vineyard tourism, Racha remains stubbornly local. The town itself offers little spectacle; its value lies in position and patience, in mornings watching shepherds drive livestock through streets unchanged for generations.

On the ground See

  • Nikortsminda Cathedral (1010–1014), whose exterior stone reliefs of angels, beasts, and vine scrolls rank among medieval Georgia's finest sculptural achievements
  • Shaori Lake, a 938-meter reservoir ringed by mixed forest where locals fish and picnic in summer, with trails continuing toward the Racha highlands
  • Khvanchkara wine cellars, particularly family producers around the village of the same name, for tastings of the naturally semi-sweet red made from Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli grapes

Practical Know before you go

Best May–October; Nikortsminda is 6km north by road, Shaori 20km east, and Khvanchkara 15km south—no public transport, so arrange a driver or rent in Kutaisi (75km southwest).
