Gudauri Viewpoint

Where the road meets the sky

Gudauri Viewpoint

Gudauri Viewpoint sits at 2,196 meters on the Georgian Military Highway, the ancient artery linking Tbilisi to Russia through the Jvari Pass. This unmarked pull-off rewards travelers with a 360-degree panorama of the Greater Caucasus: the jagged peaks of Mount Kazbek (5,047m) and Mount Shani (4,451m) dominate the northern horizon, while the Aragvi River valley unfurls below. The viewpoint gained particular fame after the 1983 Soviet-Georgian film 'Mimino' featured its sweeping vistas. No entrance fee, no crowds, no guardrails—just raw alpine grandeur that shifts from emerald summer pastures to snow-capped severity in minutes when weather rolls through. It embodies Georgia's gift of accessible wildness.

On the ground See

  • The Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument (1983), a striking concrete arch with Soviet-era mosaics located 500 meters south, commemorating the 1783 Treaty of Georgievsk
  • Paragliding launches from the slope below, with tandem flights available May–October offering aerial views of the same ridgeline
  • The Jvari Pass viewpoint marker at 2,395m, five kilometers north, marking the watershed between Black and Caspian Sea basins

Practical Know before you go
