Dano

Where stone towers guard ancient highland ways

Dano

Dano sits at 2,000 meters in the Pirikiti Alazani valley, one of Tusheti's most intact medieval settlements. Unlike better-known Omalo, Dano preserves its defensive koshkebi towers without the crush of summer visitors. The village served as a seasonal refuge for transhumant shepherds, and families still maintain ancestral homes with slate roofs and carved wooden balconies. Its value lies in unfiltered access to Tushetian life: neighbors greet in the Tushuri dialect, ancestral shrines (khatebi) mark hilltops, and the surrounding trails lead to abandoned villages like Bochorna and the Atsunta Pass. Dano rewards those who seek cultural depth over infrastructure.
