Why go
Chalaadi Glacier spills from the southern slopes of Ushba and Chatyn-Tau like a frozen river arrested mid-flow, its tongue extending to 1,800 meters—extraordinarily low for a glacier this intact. The 3-kilometer trail from Mestia follows the Mulkhura River through old-growth conifer forests before emerging onto a moraine landscape of shattered granite and compacted ice. Unlike remote glaciers requiring technical approach, Chalaadi rewards moderate effort with direct contact: you can stand at its debris-mantled snout, hear meltwater threading through blue-veined ice, and trace crevasses ascending toward peaks that Svan mountaineers have revered for centuries. It is Georgia's most democratic glacier experience.
