Alaverdi Monastery

Wine-dark stones where saints once prayed

Alaverdi Monastery

Alaverdi rises from the Alazani Valley floor like a prophecy of stone, founded in the 6th century by one of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers who brought Christianity to Georgia. Its cathedral, built in the 11th century under King Kvirike IV, stands among the tallest medieval religious structures in the country, its austere brick walls and ribbed dome catching the same light that illuminates the vineyards below—this is the heart of Kakheti's wine country, where monastic winemaking traditions have persisted for fifteen centuries. Pilgrims and travelers bound for the high Caucasus passes of Tusheti pause here to touch history worn smooth by centuries of devotion.

On the ground See

  • The 11th-century cathedral's soaring interior with its original stone-carved iconostasis fragments and medieval fresco layers
  • The monastery's qvevri cellar where monks continue ancient underground fermentation traditions using clay vessels
  • The fortified bell tower and surrounding defensive walls from the 16th-17th centuries, built against Persian and Dagestani raids

Practical Know before you go

Best visited May-October; the monastery lies 20km from Telavi on the paved road toward Omalo, making it an ideal stop before tackling the unpaved Tusheti mountain route, which requires 4WD and is typically open only July-September.
