Akhasheni

Where Alazani waters birth Georgia's velvet reds

Akhasheni

Akhasheni sits in the heart of Kakheti's wine country, where the Alazani River's fertile left bank has cultivated grapes for millennia. The village gave its name to Akhasheni wine, a protected appellation of naturally semi-sweet red made from Saperavi grapes, distinguished by its ruby color and notes of blackcurrant and cherry. Unlike more touristed spots, Akhasheni preserves an unvarnished authenticity: family cellars where qvevri wine ferments underground in clay vessels, vineyards climbing toward the Caucasus foothills, and the slow rhythm of harvest seasons unchanged for generations. It rewards those who seek wine culture without the performance.
