Kvareli

Wine tunnels carved into the Caucasus

Kvareli

Kvareli sits in the heart of Kakheti's Alazani Valley, Georgia's oldest wine region. The town's defining feature is the Khareba Winery, whose 7.7-kilometer tunnel complex was bored into the mountainside in 1962 for Soviet strategic wine reserves. Today these cool, dark corridors—lined with oak barrels and tasting alcoves—store thousands of bottles of Saperavi, Georgia's signature inky red grape. Beyond the spectacle of drinking wine inside a mountain, Kvareli offers an authentic glimpse of Kakhetian life: family vineyards, fortress views, and the slow rhythm of harvest season unchanged for millennia.

On the ground See

  • Tour and taste inside the Khareba tunnel complex, where three main tunnels branch into smaller vaults at constant 12-14°C year-round
  • Visit the 18th-century Kvareli Fortress, a brick citadel where locals once sheltered from Lezgin raids, now overlooking the town's quiet streets
  • Walk the nearby Kindzmarauli vineyards, where the namesake semi-sweet red is produced from the same Saperavi grapes grown on these slopes for centuries

Practical Know before you go

Best visited April-October; the tunnel stays open daily, but call ahead for English-guided tastings and reserve the atmospheric barrel-room dinner experience.
