Zarzma Monastery

Where golden light meets stone faith

Zarzma Monastery

Zarzma Monastery rises from the forested Kvabliani valley like a prayer made solid, its 52-meter bell tower—the tallest in medieval Georgia—piercing the mist since 1578. The 14th-century Transfiguration frescoes inside the domed church shimmer with Byzantine intensity, painted by masters from the imperial workshop of Constantinople who fled Ottoman advance. This was the dynastic church of the Jaqeli princes, whose power once stretched across these highlands, and their tombs still rest beneath the painted heavens. Unlike the overrun complexes of the capital, Zarzma rewards those who make the winding drive south from Akhaltsikhe with profound solitude and some of the finest late medieval painting in the Caucasus.
