Utsera

Fizzy waters where the Rioni slows

Utsera

Utsera sits in a tight gorge of the Rioni River, a Soviet-era spa village whose mineral springs bubble with naturally carbonated water long believed to aid digestion and nerves. Between Oni and Shovi, it drew summer visitors from across the USSR to its simple bathhouses and sanatoriums—architecture now fading but not gone. The setting matters: thick beech and conifer forests climbing to the Caucasus ridge, air sharp with altitude. Today it attracts Georgians seeking affordable wellness and hikers breaking the long road to Shovi. The waters still flow, the mountains still rise, and the village keeps its unhurried rhythm.

On the ground See

  • The old wooden bathhouses where carbonated mineral water is piped into simple soaking tubs
  • The abandoned Soviet sanatorium buildings, crumbling but atmospheric, set against forested slopes
  • The short riverside walk where the Rioni runs green and cold between stone banks
