Tetnuldi Pass

Where glaciers meet the sky

Tetnuldi Pass

Tetnuldi Pass sits at roughly 2,500 meters in the Mulkhra Valley on the way toward Adishi, a moderate crossing beneath the great peaks of Svaneti rather than a technical col. The route threads through country long used by Svan shepherds driving livestock between seasonal pastures, their stone kalas still watching from the villages below. From the pass, the high skyline of the Tetnuldi massif and the glacier-fed valleys around Adishi open in a single sweep—the classic reward of trekking between Mestia and Ushguli without mountaineering gear. You earn the view on foot, and the silence near the tree line, where Europe's highest peaks crowd the horizon, is absolute.

On the ground See

  • The Adishi Glacier icefall from the pass's northern approach
  • Ushguli's medieval defensive towers rising from the Enguri valley below
  • The Tetnuldi massif's razor-edged east face at dawn

Practical Know before you go

Best crossed June–September; a moderate day hike from the Mulkhra Valley toward Adishi with no technical gear needed in summer—hiring a local guide in Mestia helps with route-finding.
