Sagarejo

Gateway to the desert monastery

Sagarejo

Sagarejo sits at the crossroads of Kakheti's wine country and the austere beauty of the David Gareja monastery complex. Once a modest Soviet administrative center, it has become the last stop for supplies before the rugged drive to the 6th-century cave monasteries carved into the Azerbaijani borderlands. The town itself offers an unvarnished look at contemporary Kakhetian life—vineyard workers gathering at modest shops, trucks loaded with harvest grapes, and the quiet rhythms of a place that exists for the land around it rather than for visitors. It rewards those who pause to notice.

On the ground See

  • Stock up on provisions at the central bazaar before the 70km drive to David Gareja's Lavra and Udabno monasteries
  • Walk the vineyard lanes at dawn when mist hangs over the Alazani Valley floor
  • Visit the small Sagarejo Wine Factory outlet for honest Kakhetian table wines without the tasting-room theater

Practical Know before you go

Best March through November; David Gareja access requires a sturdy vehicle and checking current border conditions, as the site lies in a sensitive zone.
