Rgani Gorge

Where forest cliffs whisper ancient secrets

Rgani Gorge

Rgani Gorge is a sunken world of moss-hung limestone and emerald beech forest, carved by the Rgani River through Kakheti's eastern hills. The ruins of Rgani Fortress crown a crag above the canyon—once a 17th-century stronghold guarding the approach toward the Dagestani border, now a haunting silhouette of stacked stone. The gorge rewards hikers with cool air in summer, waterfalls after rain, and the rare sense of genuine wilderness within two hours of Telavi. It is worth the journey for those who seek Georgia's quieter marvels: not wine cellars or churches, but the patient drama of geology and the pleasure of trails where you may not meet another walker.
