Kazbegi National Park

Where stone meets glacier at 5,047 meters

Kazbegi National Park

Kazbegi National Park crowns Georgia's military highway with Mount Kazbek, the dormant volcano where Prometheus was chained in Greek myth. The park shelters the 14th-century Gergeti Trinity Church, perched at 2,170 meters where shepherds still cross themselves before summer pastures. Beyond the postcard view lies a functioning high Caucasus ecosystem: ibex herds, bearded vultures, and glaciers calving into the Terek River. This is Georgia's most accessible alpine wilderness, where Soviet-era Jeeps share switchbacks with pilgrims and trekkers heading toward the 3,660-meter Gergeti Glacier or the remote villages of Juta and Roshka.

  • The 3-day Kazbek summit trek requiring crampons and local guide registration
  • Juta village and the Chaukhi Massif's jagged 'Georgian Dolomites' for day hiking
