Goderdzi

Powder sanctuary above the Black Sea

Goderdzi

Goderdzi sits at 2,000 meters on the Goderdzi Pass, a high mountain corridor linking Adjara's subtropical coast to the highlands of Samtskhe-Javakheti. Soviet planners first developed it in the 1980s, but the resort languished for decades until Georgian investment revived it in 2015 with new lifts and infrastructure. What endures is the geography: the pass catches moisture from both the Black Sea and the Caspian, delivering exceptionally reliable snow—often two meters deep—while the slopes remain blissfully empty compared to Gudauri or Bakuriani. This is Georgia's most unpredictable, rewarding ski experience.

On the ground See

  • Ski the off-piste bowls of Mount Sakornia, where untouched powder often lasts days after storms
  • Ride the modern 8-seater gondola from the base at 1,400m to the summit, watching vegetation shift from chestnut forest to alpine tundra
  • Descend through the Goderdzi Petrified Forest Protected Area, where 40-million-year-old fossilized tree trunks emerge from snowbanks near the pass road

Practical Know before you go
